Professional Patch Cables
Page 1 - How to create your own professional looking patch cables
Making professional looking patch cables is not a hard task. In fact, it is quite easy. All
you really need is the right equipment and know where to start. This guide will show you
what you need and how to make a good looking patch cable from start to finish.

What You'll Need
|
What you'll need to start making professional patch cables is the following: CAT5 or CAT5e
cable (at length desired), RJ45 connectors (also called plugs), RJ45 Boots, and RJ45 crimper
(preferrable one that strips and cuts CAT5 cable as well). You can get these in various
color schemes; this guide will be shown with black CAT5e Cable and black RJ45 boots. Just so
you know CAT5e cable and CAT5 cable will both work on 10BT/100BT Networks. However, if you're
running a Gigabit Network, you'll need the CAT5e.

Insert and Twist
|
Once you have your equipment, you can get started. The first step is to cut the CAT5 cable
to desired length. Nothing special about this step, just make sure you make a pretty even cut
on both ends of the cable. Next, you're going to want to strip the wires ½ inch in
and avoid cutting the inner wires (or stripping them). This is where a good crimper/stipper
comes in (as seen above). All you have to do is stick the CAT5 in the stripper until it hits
the stopper then squeeze the handle a little and twist the cable. Once you've done that,
pull out the cable and you have yourself a perfectly stripped cable.

Now that we have the cable stripped, we need to seperate the individual wires so that
they fit into the individual wire slots in the RJ45 head in the correct order.
