Depending on your use of a thumbdrive, performance can be very important, namely read and write speed. Trek gives us some expected performance specifications (Read @ 700 KB/s, Write @ 350 KB/s) but products rarely perform exactly to spec.

After some benchmarking the results revealed close to expected results. SiSoft Sandra 2001 gives the thumbdrive a disk index of 462KB/sec. This disk mark includes read and write speed. Below is a graph of the index Sandra 2001 provided along with the comparison indexes Sandra uses to put the benchmark into perspective.

Obviously, these are not ground breaking benchmark numbers but they were not expected to be either. To put this speed into perspective, I am able to read, write, and execute Scheme code off the drive almost as if it was on my laptop's hard disk. However, my desktop (which has a RAID 0 array) makes visible an ever so slight performance difference, but for the most part the thumbdrive performs well enough to offer easy, portable, and fast storage.

As for value, in regards to the the thumbdrive it really depends on how useful this product is to you and how much storage space you will need. This particular 16MB drive can be had over at TekGear for $29.00. However, a 256MB stick is quite a bit more ($199.00) but you pay for what you need.

I am going to rate this product for its usefulness from my perspective. After long term use of this product, I've formed the opinion that this product was extremely easy to use and came in very handy. I had no performance issues with it and it never failed to install (on the systems it was expected to install on). While there are certainly similar devices from other companies available for purchase and this is not exactly a breakthrough product. It does serve its purpose well and without any error (well, within a month of heavy use and being attached to my keychain) and performs very close to spec. I am not about to dock Trek for being unoriginal here. So, Trek earns a solid rating from me.
