Zalman ZM-RS6F 5.1 Real Surround Sound Headphones
Page 2 - Testing and Conclusion
Testing was started by listening to some Hip-Hop Music on some CDs. The mid to high frequencies were nice and crisp on the ZM-RS6F; but the unit was obviously lacking bass. Songs such as I Like the Way You Move - Outkast sounded as if they were stripped of their bass, which is clearly disappointing. I have heard much better bass (and sound quality) using ear buds. On the other hand, if you are not a fan of songs with a lot of bass, then this set of headphones will do just fine.
Moving onto computer gaming, these headphones were tested on an Athlon XP 2000+ with a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Sound Card. I decided to start up with Counter-Strike (v1.6), a game where sounds are an important factor in determining what the next move will be. Using the ZM-RS6F, I could easily and correctly indentify in which direction gunfire and footsteps were coming from. This was even clearer when playing Unreal Tournament 2004. The thunder of explosions, the rumble of vehicles, and the incessant rattling of gunfire made it feel like I was in the middle of the action. Gamers now have the ability to experience surround sound gaming without disturbing others.
Lastly, these headphones were tested with action-packed DVD movies. The headphones were best represented with movies such as Infernal Affairs and The Transporter. All explosions, gun fire and speech can be clearly heard with high quality. However, the headphone’s surround sound seemed to lack something that actual home theater systems possess; I suppose that the absence of the actual theatre environment means that the sounds do not have as much space to disperse and thereby sound different.
In conclusion, the ZM-RS6F Real Surround Sound Headphones are definitely an item to consider when shopping for a compact device capable of producing powerful surround sound. Its great shape allows it to be compacted and brought along on road trips. These headphones will satisfy your craving, whether it is gaming, music or theater. Except for the weak bass and absence of an inline volume control, Zalman is definitely becoming a contender in the personal audio arena.
